April 16-21
After a grueling overnight bus trip (and several border checks), our first stop in Malaysia was the capital, Kuala Lumpur. We stayed there for many days….which are all now a blur.
Malaysia is a very interesting country, a melting pot of Chinese, Indian and Malay cultures.
We spent a lot of time experiencing each culture by eating. We also spent a lot of time sightseeing (or should I say walking around the city getting lost?) and, I must admit, a lot of time in the air-conditioned hotel room with wi-fi, the movie channel, toilet paper and hot showers.

As for eating, we tried to eat a variety of Chinese, Indian, and Malaysian food.
This was a great fruit stand in Chinatown, across from our hostel.
Our first Malaysian chicken satay....yum!!!! One thing I like to do is try things that look interesting, even if I do not know exactly what they are. For example, I think these are heart-shaped chicken nuggets.....
As for entertainment and sightseeing, we tried to get a mix of cultures there as well.
One evening we saw an absolutely out-of-this world Indian dance performance. The stamina and flexibility and talent of this dance troupe was incredible. We were in awe. They made me tired just watching them. On one hand, I was inspired to come home and dance and motivated to train harder. But on the other hand, I can never dance as wonderfully as they did, so what’s the point?
KL Tower
Petronas Towers
Butterfly Park

Another evening we watched a short Malaysian dance performance that paled in comparison, but was good for us to experience.
Of course, we had to do the normal tourist things:

And no trip to Malaysia would be complete without monkeys.
