Patang Beach -- Phuket, Thailand

The sunsets from Patang Beach were quite possibly the most beautiful we have seen so far. For several evenings in a row we relaxed on the beach, watching the sun slowly sink bringing a relief from the heat of the day.

Several times in the past few weeks we had noticed strange orange “stars” glowing in the sky from towns along the ocean. I knew I didn’t recognize the constellations they had formed and they were awfully orange and close to us to be stars. But we had no other explanation until relaxing on the beach one night. From one end of the beach we noticed the orange “stars” being launched into the sky and had to get a closer look to try to uncover the mystery. It turned out that they were actually mini-hot air balloons that the locals were selling to tourists as Good Luck Balloons. These balloons were large sacks with an opening at one end that contained an oil-soaked fabric coil that would burn for several minutes while the sack slowly floated up into the sky. I’m sure they are not the best things for the environment but they were very beautiful.

Ooooh, aaaaahhh! That really is very beautiful sunset. I have made smaller versions of the floating burning paper things. We used newspaper. Pretty cool.
